ADVANCED SKI MOUNTAINEERING COURSE

Back

Medium

The Mountain Guides from the School of Mountaineering and Ski Mountaineering - Mountain Friends are organizing a 3-day advanced ski mountaineering course amidst the snowy peaks of the Adamello range.

The course is aimed at ski mountaineers who already independently tackle mountain itineraries but wish to refine their technique and experience in this environment. Participants must be comfortable skiing off-piste on moderate slopes. The goal is to enable participants to move independently in winter mountain conditions. In addition to personal skiing technique, topics such as avalanche self-rescue, trip planning, snow science, meteorology, and GPS use will be covered in depth.

PROGRAM

Day 1 Meeting at the parking lot of the cable car at Passo del Tonale at 8:00 AM for gear check. The first day focuses on downhill technique. Using the lifts, participants will descend Cantiere and/or Sgualdrina slopes. In the early afternoon, participants ascend to the top of Presena and ski down to the Mandrone Hut, where an avalanche rescue workshop will be held.

Day 2 Ascent of Mount Adamello, one of the highest and most historically significant peaks in the Eastern Alps. This day requires good physical endurance due to the elevation gain (+1200 m) and distance, but it offers immense satisfaction. The route begins with a traverse of the extensive Pian di Neve, leading to the base of Mount Adamello, which is climbed in the final stretch using an ice axe and crampons. Alternatively, the ascent of Cresta Crose or Cresta Cannone can be considered for those looking for more technical sections.

Day 3 The last day features a descent into the untamed Pisgana Valley. From the hut, participants ascend to Passo Venezia (+700 m), where skins are removed, and the descent begins. The trip concludes in Ponte di Legno, where participants can return to Passo del Tonale using the lifts.
